Medication Administration Training (MAT)

This course is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and the Virginia Department of Social Services. It is designed to teach best practice techniques for giving medication to children in child day programs.

Requirements for successful course completion:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass a written test and skills demonstration
  • Be able to read and write in English well enough to understand the health care providers’ written instructions and the parent/caregivers’ written permissions
  • Be able to write down that you have administered the medication
  • Be able to read, understand, and follow step-by-step instructions for the safe administration of medication
  • Have current certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (including hands-on training)

Southwest Virginia CPR offers the following MAT classes:

  • MAT – full day classroom instruction
  • MAT Independent Study (IS) – blended learning online and classroom instruction
  • MAT First Renewal – an option for current MAT certified folks
  • AMAT (formerly EMAT) – “allergy” medication administration training focusing on Benadryl, inhalers, and EpiPens
